For about 30 years, in the time before I was born, my grandfather was the chief of police in Salina and through him my mother developed an interest in the criminal justice system with everything he could show her and teach her. She was never able to pursue her interest in the criminal justice system, but ended up passing that interest to me as he did for her. From this, choosing criminal justice as my major seemed like an easy choice. You can say the interest and want to be involved in the criminal justice system kind of runs in my family, as I have had some other relatives work in the system before. Most recent is one of my cousins works at the Central Utah Correctional Facility in Gunnison.
Hello, my name is Leslie Velasquez. I am from Salina,Utah a small town that many haven't even heard of. I moved to Cedar City four years ago to attend SUU.
On September 2, 2017, my grandfather passed away and a week later we put him to rest. It was a ceremony fitting an amazing man and it made me realize how glad I am that I have chosen criminal justice as my major and am continuing to keep law enforcement in the family.
