Abstract of Project
This project will use research to identify the different types of death police officers have suffered. It will use various sources such as the reported statistics by various fields in the Criminal Justice System. I will also use specifics from cases I find in my research to find ways that are proposed to lessen the amount of deaths.
I plan to use cases specific to Utah to start. I then plan to expand to more states through the United States to compare the numbers between the states. It will show if there are some states that have significantly higher number of deaths than those around it. I will also compare different strategies between states of how they deal with the officer deaths.
To achieve the required 40 hours, I plan to split parts of the research into research, write, review, and report. My basic timeline will be that I will spend 15 hours on research, 15 on writing, 5 on review, and 5 on reporting through PowerPoint. Depending on how much I can find will potentially alter the timeline.
Larger Purpose: This project will help identify the risks involved in law enforcement and how most officer deaths happen. It will also help identify factors that are related to each type of death and how they may be prevented.
Project Goal: The main goal of this project is to identify the amount of deaths of officers of each types and to find possible ways to prevent these deaths.
1-3 Outcome(s): Outcomes of this project are to identify what the potential risks involving deaths of officers. Finding possible ways to prevent or lessen the number of homicides and suicides involving officers is another possible outcome. It will also help me to personally work on my research and writing skills.
Deliverable(s): My final project will be the research paper I am planning to write. I plan to use the writing center on campus to help with the editing of my paper and will include any notes they have for me. I also want present the information in PowerPoint form for an easy display of information.
Differentiation: Many Criminal Justice projects I have personally seen involve surveys sent out to the students. I am however using research to find my data. This project is specific to my interests and is a project I have chosen to improve the skill I personally need to work on. It will set me apart because of the project being chosen to be specific to me and my skills.
